Behind the Mask: Jon Moore’s Art of Character Creation
Jon Moore is an Emmy Award and Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (MUAHS) Award–winning prosthetic make-up artist, concept designer and producer working across film and television. With over two decades in the industry, he has built a reputation for imaginative, technically sophisticated work that helps define the look and feel of a production.
His career spans major studio projects and distinctive independent films, where he contributes both practical prosthetic applications and conceptual design. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and calm presence in high-pressure environments, Jon collaborates closely with directors, designers and production teams to bring memorable, emotionally grounded characters to life on screen.
Growing up in a working-class family in the North of England, Jon didn’t have an obvious route into the screen industries. There were no family connections or ready-made shortcuts, so he built his path job by job and set by set. That experience has shaped not only his work ethic, but also his determination to make the industry more open and accessible to others from similar backgrounds.
Jon specialises in prosthetic make-up design and application, character creation and transformation, and concept design for film and TV. His vast on-set experience means he understands how to balance creative ambition with the realities of schedule, budget and performance, ensuring continuity, realism and innovation in every project.
Alongside his on-set work, Jon is the founder of Blue Trotter Media, his UK-based production company. Blue Trotter Media is a platform for bold, character-driven stories aimed at both local and global audiences, with a particular interest in supporting underrepresented voices. One of its current key projects is the feature film adaptation of Melvin Burgess’ novel The Ghost Behind the Wall, which Jon is developing as a distinctive and character led, atmospheric story.
Central to Jon’s ethos is the idea of sending the “elevator back down”. As Blue Trotter Media grows, his aim is to create tangible pathways into the industry: offering advice, mentoring, training and on-set shadowing opportunities for emerging artists and crew, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. For Jon, success is about more than credits and awards; it’s about how many new voices he can help bring through the door whilst also producing material that is both inspiring and exquisite in quality.
